Kenny's Tip of the Day - Take the Audience On YOUR Ride!!!
This is a very easy trap to get caught up in. Especially in Pop music where the goal is to “please” your audience. And it’s a very nuanced thing. You “think” the goal is to make, create or mix music that your audience wants to hear. And that’s certainly NOT wrong. If they don’t like it, they’re not going to want to be a part of your audience. You will lose them.
But the mistake I see made is thinking you need to create a “ride” for them that they already want to take. In other words, that you need to design an experience that they want to enjoy in that moment. And that’s not the case. Nor should it be.
No. It’s your ride. It’s your journey. Your job is to convince them to take that ride with you. You’re the one making the decisions. Not them.
Think of it like watching a movie. As a fan, you have no idea what movie you’re going to see. And it’s certainly pretty boring to watch the movie you came to see. What makes it interesting is that the movie maker convinced you to come and see it and now they’re going to take you on a ride. Their ride. And that’s what makes this all so unique and exciting. You don’t know what’s around the next corner.
It’s the same with music. Who cares how loud or how much ring the audience expects the snare to have. How deep the kick drum should be. How bright or how dull the vocal is or where it sits in the mix.
Sure, you can copy the top mixers of the day but why? Is that YOUR journey? Is that interesting to you? Why do I want to listen to a record that gives me what I expect? There’s already plenty of that in the world. Music by the numbers. It’s boring and predictable. Because they’re giving you what you want to hear. At least what they think you want to hear.
That’s not greatness. Greatness comes from a visionary deciding what they want and having an audience find it interesting enough and want to take that ride with the creator. Create that ride for yourself and we’ll all hop on board.
