Kenny's Tip of the Day - How to Get a Record Deal!!!!!
This one is for you artists. One of the biggest questions ever asked. How do I get a record deal?
Well. The answer is quite simple yet also very frustrating. The BEST way to get a record deal is to NOT need one.
What the heck does that mean? It means that record companies are not looking to make you a star. They're looking to find stars. People that are already on their way to being a big artist without them. So they can ride YOUR wave.
Many people mistakenly think that the major labels are CREATING talent. Not even close to true. They are finding talent and allowing them to take the next step. Assuming that you are ready for that step.
Don't get me wrong. They are looking for people with talent. But it's very hard to get them to notice you on talent alone. Their biggest question will be "What do you have going on right now"?
IOW - Where is your career? And if you think having great songs and a good voice is enough, you're probably very wrong. And if you think it means having a great sounding recording with all of the best plugins, you're dead wrong.
Are you playing sold out shows on a regular basis? Are you making 5k a month in merch or by crowdfunding? Do you have licensing deals with a few commercials or TV shows.
My point here is that all of the things that you thought the label was going to do for you, they're expecting YOU to do before they're interested.
Most people get frustrated because they think their career has stalled because they can't get a recording deal. In truth, it's quite the opposite. You need to accomplish all of those things yourself before a label will even be interested.
But the best part is that when you get there, you really won't need one. I worked with an artist that had secured 4 or 5 songs on a major TV show and a few of those songs were in Gap and Target commercials. She was offered a multi-million dollar deal and turned it down. She didn't need it. She was doing fine by herself.
So in short. The best way to get a recording contract is to not NEED one. I hope this message finds you well.
