Kenny's Tip of the Day - How to get a Manager!!
Another question I'm asked quite often is how to get a Manager. Many top Producers and Mixers have one. So you probably think that you should have one too. Especially if you're looking to get more and better gigs.
Well. The problem with this logic is that that's NOT how this works. Managers don't get you gigs. They may get you a better price for a gig as they would be the ones to negotiate for you but YOU are the one who gets the gigs. Both before and AFTER you have a Manager.
Think about it from the Manager's side. If you are not getting steady high paying gigs, what are they going to do with 20% of that? Most good managers I know will only work with you if you already have a steady lineup of clients and work. And good paying work.
So, like most things in the "business", it's a catch 22. You need a manager to get work but you can't get a manager unless you're already working.
But that's not completely true. Nobody cares if you have a manager. They'll hire you to Produce or Mix their record if they think your work is great and you "sell" them on yourself.
So why do you need a Manager? Truth is, you might not. What they do is manage your gigs, negotiate pricing and sometimes use your current work to get you more work. And they CAN earn their money just in getting you higher paying gigs. My manager brought my rate up 10X simply by hanging up the phone when the rate was too low. Something I'm not sure I would have done.
But in the end, you have to get your gigs. Work on as much as you can as often as you can. And when people hear about the great work you're doing, they will call you. And when too many of them are calling you all at once and you don't have time to answer all of their calls…
Congratulations. You need a Manager.
