Kenny's Tip of the Day - You Are, Who and What You Record!!
You are YOUR clients. If you're spending your time polishing turds, you can't take "pride" in this. This is where YOU are. You are a part of their situation. You are NOT above them or the situation that you're in.
Now I'm not saying that this should never happen. We all have to start somewhere. I used to stock produce on the shelf in a supermarket. But I understood where I was and that I didn't want to stay there.
Being able to make music for a living is a great privilege but if you're walking around with your chest pumped up taking solace in the idea that your recordings are mediocre but it's the artists fault. Not yours. You've lost the plot.
I've mentioned this many times before, you don't want to be the smartest person in the room. When Bruce Swedien was recording Michael Jackson, do you think he thought he was the most talented person in that room? Or that this record would be so much better if these guys could write songs and play their instruments? Of course not. So avoid that thinking.
Yes. It's great that you're getting by, paying the bills, recording something but always look forward to a better situation. To a point where the weakest link is YOU. And that the challenge everyday is to live up to the music that you're recording. Not the other way around.
