Resistance Is Your Enemy!!

Kenny’s Tip of the Day - Resistance Is Your Enemy!!

I don’t talk enough about this but it is one of the most important things I can think of for creative types. And it can be applied to mixing, mastering, recording or even producing. But it definitely applies to songwriting. As in, how do you finish a song? Although, it could also be an issue with getting started.

Resistance is your enemy. And I say this because it is good to give your enemy a name. Of course, as creative people, we can give resistance any name we want. It could be that you don’t have the right guitar sound so you can’t write this song. It doesn’t feel right. So you go out and buy another guitar. But the amp sound still isn’t working. So you buy another amp. Or a an amp sim plugin. Now it will be right. Right?

No. There’s still something missing. Maybe it’s the song tempo. Gotta run to the store and buy a metronome. See the pattern? You can do this for days and accomplish nothing.

Resistance doesn’t have to be musical either. It could be that you need to walk the dog. Pay some bills. Mow the lawn. Your resistance can take many shapes. It is the shape shifter of shapeshifters.

And being a creative person, you will get very good at creating or allowing resistance to manifest itself in many ways. It all comes down to one simple idea. Resistance wants you to lose. You battle resistance every single day. It’s goal is to STOP you from writing that song. Or finishing it. Or tackling the mix. Resistance wants you to find an excuse not to finish your work.

What’s important here is that you recognize it. Not just that it affects you but realize that it affects everyone. Even me. I thought of a few reasons not to write this article but I did it anyway. Resistance lost.

But it’s also important to recognize that the goal is not to eventually have no resistance in your life. It will always be there. The goal is to see it there. Like a goalkeeper in soccer or in hockey. Like the defense in basketball. You wake up and resistance is staring you right in the face. The goal is to see it and beat it. Every single day.
