Everybody Wants To Quit!!

Kenny’s Tip of the Day - Everybody Wants To Quit!!

It’s true. It’s NOT just you. Every creative person wrestles with the idea of not only throwing out the piece of work they’re working on at the moment, they also consider quitting this line of work or profession entirely. Seriously. It’s true.

Now why do I say this? It’s because I know that there’s a few of you reading this right now who are either considering quitting or are about to throw the song or production that you’re working on right now in the garbage. You think it was a waste of time. You stink. You don’t know what you’re doing.

I’m writing this to help you. So you know that it’s NOT just you. We all do it. We all wanna quit. I was inches away from throwing away a song that single-handedly bought me my first house. It almost never happened.

I watched a Masterclass the other day with Martin Scorsese. Easily one of the best filmmakers of all time. And he said that “If you don’t get physically ill, watching your first rough cut, something’s wrong”. Think about that. Someone who has made dozens of great movies STILL gets sick each time he watches his finished work for the first time. That’s how it works.

I believe it was Jerry Seinfeld who said a similar thing. And I’m paraphrasing but he basically said that people think stand up comedians are great at public speaking. They just have that gift. They have no fear. No. He said. It’s not true. We’re just as scared to get out there as anyone in the audience. The difference is NOT that we’re not filled with fear or freaked out. The difference is that we’re freaked out. And we STILL do it anyway.

And that’s the key. Finish the project you're working on. See it through. Don’t give up because you’re scared. We’re all scared. The difference is that you don’t let the fear win. You do it. Even IF you’re afraid. Because everyone is. Even the very best at their profession.

I’ll leave you with one other thing that Marty said. “If the machinery of it all, seems too big and scary and overwhelming… That’s great. You wake up in the morning and you do it anyway.”
