Kenny's Tip of the Day - Always Mix As You Go!!!
If the goal is to build a production that is compelling, arranged correctly and moves the listener, you must be Mixing as you go.
By that, I mean, you should be getting “keeper” sounds all along the way. At every stage. Whatever you’re tracking, make it sound great WHILE you record it. You could be printing it that way or you could just be monitoring it thru your speakers with the ability to change it later. It doesn’t really matter.
What does matter, is that what you’re hearing thru your monitoring speakers sounds as finished as possible. Because everything we hear, determines the next moves we make. You can’t leave tracks off (muted) or have them NOT sounding like they will and should and still judge where your are in the production.
How can you decide what the song or recording needs, if you’re not hearing the spaces or gaps in the production to fill? Or not to fill? Or what to change? You can’t. Everything needs to be judged in context with the other tracks sounding like what they will eventually sound like in the mix.
So do yourself a favor. When you’re tracking, listening or just deciding what needs to happen next, take a few minutes, stop the recording process and create a better mix. It will be more inspiring going forward and more importantly, allow you to make better decisions with your production.
